Brain implant turns speech and gestures into text at once
Researchers built a brain–computer interface (a device that reads brain signals) with 253 electrodes on the brain’s surface that can turn intended speech into on-screen text and drive a personalized animated avatar for gestures at the same time. Two people with severe paralysis—one after a brainstem stroke, one with ALS—used speech-only, gesture-only, and combined tasks within seconds of intending them. The team calls it a proof of concept, not a finished clinical product.
