Claude finds a CRISPR-like enzyme system in phage DNA

Anthropic’s new biology lab reports that Claude agents mined DNA databases and flagged ART — a reverse transcriptase in bacteriophages sitting beside a CRISPR-like array of DNA repeats. Human scientists ran the bench tests; early work shows the array is expressed as short RNAs, but what the system does is still unknown and outside labs have not confirmed it. Anthropic posted a preprint of the find.

Alibaba’s open Qwen Image 2.1 claims to beat closed image models

Alibaba’s Qwen team released open-weight Qwen-Image-2.1, a roughly 7-billion-parameter image generator it says tops most closed models on its own benchmark — independent checks are still pending. It can create and edit transparent images, take up to 10 reference photos, and run on strong consumer GPUs such as an RTX 3090. The research license blocks commercial use without a separate license.

Lilly’s brenipatide shows early promise for addiction and depression

Eli Lilly presented Phase I data on brenipatide, a once-weekly GIP/GLP-1 dual agonist aimed at brain reward pathways rather than just metabolism. The drug was generally well tolerated, with about a 9–12.5 day half-life and GI side effects similar to placebo. Lilly is jumping straight into Phase III trials for major depression and alcohol use disorder, plus more studies in other addiction and psychiatric conditions.

HKUST cooler holds 1 million cycles with no power drop

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology built an elastocaloric cooling device that held 400 watts of cooling power and a 41 K temperature span across 1 million cycles with no degradation. Its TiNiCuCo metal refrigerant stayed fatigue-free after 100 million accelerated cycles, pointing toward decade-class durability as a greener alternative to vapor-compression refrigerants. Results appear in Joule; an air-conditioner prototype is next.

Katzenberg: AI for creativity needs Hollywood’s terms The World is Changing: AI For Creativity — By Jeffrey Katzenberg. A few months ago, I sat in my office in Silicon Valley and watched as a tech founder showed me something extraordinary. On the screen was a fully realized, beautifully lit, well-composed animated scene. It was stunning and it made me feel exactly what I felt in 1986 watching Luxo Jr. … more
